Stephen Schiff’s bio
Stephen Schiff is a screenwriter, TV writer-producer, and journalist.
His film work includes Lolita (1997), The Deep End of the Ocean (1999), True Crime (1999), Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (2010), and American Assassin (2017).
In 2013, Schiff became a writer and consulting producer of the FX television series The Americans, starring Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys. He continued with the show for the rest of its six-season run, rising to the position of writer/executive producer for its last two seasons.
For his work on The Americans, Schiff won a Golden Globe, two Writers Guild of America Awards, the Peabody Award, the Critics Choice Award, the Television Critics Association (TCA) Award, the American Film Institute (AFI) Award (for “Contribution to America’s Cultural Legacy”), and the Producers Guild (PGA) Award. He also received two Prime Time Emmy nominations and two additional Writers Guild of America Award nominations. During Schiff’s tenure with the show, The Americans was nominated for 73 major awards, winning 24 of them.
Before becoming a film and television writer and producer, Schiff had an extensive career in journalism. A Pulitzer Prize finalist in Distinguished Criticism, Schiff was a staff writer at The New Yorker for ten years and was Vanity Fair’s Critic-at-Large for nine years before that.
He has also been film critic of National Public Radio’s Fresh Air, The Atlantic, Glamour, and The Boston Phoenix; a Correspondent on CBS-TV’s national newsmagazine West 57th; and a contributor to The New York Times, Newsweek/The Daily Beast, Conde Nast Traveler, and other publications.
Schiff is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Television Academy, the Writers Guild of America East, and the Producers Guild of America. He served four terms on the governing Council of the Writers Guild of America East. He also served as the Writers Guild’s National Chairman and a member of the WGA East’s negotiating committees. In 2002, he was given the Writers Guild’s Richard B. Jablow Award.
Since 2005, he has served as Chairman of the Board of the Society for the Study of Myth and Tradition, which publishes Parabola magazine.
The father of two children and a stepson and stepdaughter, Schiff lives in New York City with his wife, the New York Times best-selling author Laura Day.
